THE COTTON EXCHANGE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN DOWNTOWN WILMINGTON

The Cotton Exchange, one of downtown Wilmington’s most beloved
shopping and dining destinations, is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of
local businesses, historic preservation, and community connection in the heart of the city.

Located at 321 N. Front Street, the Cotton Exchange opened in 1976. The original buildings
were saved during a time when much of downtown Wilmington faced demolition and decline in
the 1970s. Visionary developers Joe Reeves and Mal Murray instead chose to restore the
structures and create a new retail concept that blended modern shopping with historic
architecture. In 1990, the property was purchased by John and Jean Bullock as they contributed
to the revitalization efforts of several downtown properties.

What began as an innovative preservation project has grown into one of Wilmington’s most
recognizable destinations. Today, the Cotton Exchange is owned by the Bullock family and
home to more than 25 locally owned shops and restaurants housed within a collection of
restored brick buildings connected by courtyards and walkways that reflect the charm of historic
Wilmington.

Since opening, the Cotton Exchange has become a cornerstone of the downtown district,
welcoming locals and visitors alike while supporting small businesses.

“We’re really celebrating 50 years of local dreams,” said Cheryl Hartsoe, property manager and
member of the Bullock family. “The Cotton Exchange has always been about supporting small
businesses. Many merchants have started their businesses here and several establishments
have been with us for more than 40 years, which speaks to the strong community we’ve built
together.”

As the Cotton Exchange celebrates its golden anniversary, the destination continues to evolve
while remaining rooted in its mission of promoting local businesses and community experiences.

“This milestone is not just about the past,” Hartsoe added. “It’s about celebrating the merchants,
customers, and community that have made the Cotton Exchange a part of Wilmington’s story for
the last 50 years and will continue to do so for years to come.”
